PROLOGUE-BLN – NEW FEMINISM/NEW EUROPE
THE LANGUAGE OF RESISTANCE
7 - 10 December 2006, Berlin

http://www.faces-L.net/prologue/about/

The Language of Resistance is an attempt to tackle the dissonance within European Feminist discourses through semi-public and public events. The Language of Resistance is part of the Prologue: New Feminism, New Europe conference and exhibition series. After conferences in Graz, Austria, and an exhibition and symposium in Manchester, UK, the Berlin symposium builds on previous discussions and arguments to unfold the larger issues confronting feminists across Europe. Multiculturalism, privilege, precarity, migration, race, gender and other terms are applied across a broad spectrum of practices - often at the expense of communication meant to foster cooperation and critical understanding. Earlier Prologue events showed the potential for multidisciplinary cooperations that address feminist histories and goals, but also exposed ruptures within the language and understanding of specific issues and terminology.

Twenty-five artists, theorists, political activists, and cultural actors will be invited to discuss and problematize these notions from a feminist perspective between December 7th and 10th, 2006. Popular culture, critical texts, and videos offer multiple points of entry and departure that illustrate the difficulty of navigating through an emergent European Feminism that has no common language. An internal semi-public seminar will allow space to address specific histories and meanings of often misapplied terms to establish multidisciplinary, cross cultural and trans-European communication. Lectures, screenings and performances will extend this dialog to an extensive public. A complementary reader will be prepared, with the texts made available via the internet. The goal is to achieve potent communication within existing networks.
