Grada Kilomba on Plantation Memories: herbstradio 99.1 FM Berlin

Herbstradio is proud to broadcast an interview with Dr. Grada Kilomba on her recently published book, Plantation Memories: episodes of everyday racism.

„Plantation Memories is a compilation of episodes exploring everyday racism. Linking postcolonial theory and lyrical narrative, the book provides a new and inspiring interpretation of everyday racism in the form of short stories.”(UNRAST 2008).

Kilomba's literary work is a combination of academic writing and lyrical narrative, approaching remembered stories of slavery, colonialism and episodes of everyday racism.

The interview will be broadcast in Berlin on Friday, September 4th at 17:00.

Outside ISEA

outside ISEA

now that it's over, & i'm in istanbul, it's hard to put my brain back into last week & the end of ISEA - but i'll try, in an attempt to give some kind of conclusion to my ISEA blogging.

ISEA: missing

i have the feeling i'm in new zealand; this icy wellington wind is surely blowing off antarcica, pushing a diverse flock of clouds across a south pacific sky. the hills i can see between the copper-domed victorian gothic buildings are surely the hills around dunedin ... but no; there's a whole different undercurrent here - altho at the conference we're almost completely insulated from it.

ISEA: day 2

i'm so disappointed!!! the pure:dyne live boot (cd or usb) doesn't work on ppc macs!!! : ( i was so looking forward to being able to really explore linux & the many great open source artist-led applications that are now available. but so far it's not to be. back in 2003 when i got hold of a dynebolic cd, it didn't work on any macs at all. now with pure:dyne, it hasn't been worth making it work on ppc as well as intel macs. my little g4 iBook may be 3 years old now but i'm hoping it's going to last me a while longer - i don't like this constant forced hardware obsolence; so i guess i'll have to wait, or borrow someone else's computer, to explore pure:dyne.

prologue: Transitional Geographies / Feminist Mapping at ISEA

The Prologue Panel will take place during ISEA on: Friday, 28 August 2009 at 14:00 at the Main Hub: Waterfront Hall, Belfast, Lanyon Place.

The Prologue Surgery will take place at: Golden Thread Gallery at 14:00.

The panel [Prologue]: Transitional Geographies / Feminist Mapping explores the cultural and political impact of European enlargement on feminist art and discourse: feminist participation in the cultural, economic, technological and structural spheres of a changing Europe remains a challenge. This panel aims to map out the crucial issues of how and where feminism remains a radical innovator in art, technology and society and to make public contemporary feminist art and discourse. The panelists - media artists, theorists and sociologists - are invited to reflect on the impact of shifting European borders and interests. This is extended to how feminist work addresses these changes.

ISEA2009: session hopping

i began my day with artists' presentations in the bar, where floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides rendered the flat-screens more reflections than anything else. this made it difficult for the first presentation, "ribbons - a live cinema instrument" by tomas laurenzo. ribbons is an application is based on VJ tools but with the intention to combine more of the narrative possibilities of cinema with typical image-based club VJing. tomas talked about the "composing" of tools - where the creation of the tool has a strong impact on the artistic output, & the needs of both performer & public are integrated into the process of creating the tool.

ISEA2009: starting with good intentions

as predicted, it's raining in belfast for the opening of ISEA2009, but i don't mind because i've got an umbrella : ) & anyway we're inside today. yesterday was a lovely day & i wandered belfast's central streets, orienting myself & finding some of the venues. i'm here to present a paper (friday afternoon at 3.30pm) & also as a volunteer intern, which means i get to invigilate - this involves controlling the doors for a couple of sessions & making sure i know where the fire exits are. apparently we inviligators get to have walkie-talkies, which i'm looking forward to : )

Eclectic Tech Carnival to raise women interest in technology

In the male-dominated world of technology, where video games are coded with men in mind and programmers seem to belong to an all male club, women are rarities eyed with curiosity and treated with condescension.

join us on the train Ars -> ETC London:Linz:Istanbul

Anyone interest in joining us for all or part of an overland trip this September, London->Linz->Istanbul, for art, tech and ecology?

"The Eclectic Tech Carnival is a gathering of women with a critical interested in Free Information and Open Standards technology. The event creates an opportunity for women to network, exchange skills and have fun!"

I've been working with Aileen Derieg and Rob from Arts Catalyst to plan an overland treck in early September from London to Linz (for Ars Electronica) then on to Istanbul (for ETC + the Istanbul Biennial starts around the same time).
